BioHilos | Rubberised Threads

BioHilos being produced in a community of women on Cotijuba Island near Belem, this unique biomaterial welds together a soul made of a cotton thread and a natural latex coating. Together with DaTribu, I embarked on a journey to find new ways to produce these BioHilos more efficiently and explore new methods of using mineral and organic pigments to further optimize the circularity of the product. BioHilos can be utilized in various applications, whether in the field of design or as a medium in art.

BioHilos - Threads to a more sustainable world

BioHilos, developed through Katia Fagundes and the women's community on Cotijuba Island, offers the opportunity to incorporate a natural material, sourced and processed locally, into your design or artistic creations. In a collaboration with DaTribu and Katia, I was able to experiment with this craft and producing my own latex coated threads, using locally forged pigments of organic and mineral origin. BioHilos can be returned to the environment as a circular product, contributing to the ecological balance. The latex harvested by the women's community is directly processed into BioHilos, ensuring a direct connection to the source and providing income to the women of the community. The value derived from this labor-intensive process extends beyond mere material worth; it plays a vital role in preserving large territories of primary rainforests. This preservation is facilitated by the constant forest monitoring conducted by the Seringueiros, who are integral to harvesting the wild, natural rubber.

“When women earn their own income, it provides the community with new opportunities to flourish.” Katia, Creative Head of DaTribu
