A Pestemal for you

Inspired by Istanbul and its beauty. I am wondering the streets of Istanbul and trying to capture the city in my designs. In Istanbul, old meets new, modern manufacturing meets traditional craftsmanship. Another essential point of my collection is the idea of sustainable production, which can re- combine tradition and modern techniques. The production of the collection takes place completely within Turkey and combines different crafts. After the design phase is finished, my designs will be woven on old-style-shuttled looms by weavers and existing Pestemal will be decorated with manual screen printing.

My defined colour worlds are divided into four colour families, which are inspired by the four elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. These four elements manifested themselves to me in different ways in Istanbul. The Spices stand for the Fire, the Iznik-Tiles for the Water, the Turquoise for the Earth and the Flowers for the Air. Two neutral colours, black and a warm beige, inspired by Ebony and Ivory to complete the palette.

The size of the designs is based on the Pestemal to be printed, the dimensions are approximately 90cm x 180cm. The designs which are small and intricate differ from the more bigger and bold ones. The designs can be arranged as an over-all design or distributed as smaller repeating designs over the surface. It is also possible to arrange placed elements from the designs on the surface of the Pestemal. Different moods are to be shown, from warm to cool.
