Mineral pigments are derived from natural non organic sources such as stones, clays, and earth. The refinement process often involves the technique of levigation, where the raw materials are finely ground and then suspended in water to isolate the desired pigments. I learned these techniques from fresco painter Jesus Gonzalez Gutierrez in Oaxaca, Mexico, with the intention of using them to color natural latex with mineral pigments. The extracted pigments are then dried and further processed. They are prized for their versatility and durability, finding applications in various fields including painting, ceramics, construction materials, and cosmetics.
