Eminönü

Eminönü is a former district of Istanbul in Turkey, currently a quarter within the Fatih district, which is the capital district of Istanbul and of Istanbul Province. Eminönü covers roughly the area on which the ancient city of Byzantium was built. During the daytime the area is packed with merchants and their customers, hordes of shoppers and many tourists. At night it is a quiet place. There is some housing in Eminönü but most of the buildings are offices, shops and workshops, and if one does happen to be there in the evening the contrast with the daytime is eerie and somewhat menacing. Every day roughly two million people work in or pass through Eminönü. There is the place where you can find the hidden gems of craft, come and explore this world SACRED HANDS.

Mehmet & Ahmed

The two carpenters and their workshop are truely something you would overlook, but that would be a terrible mistake. Their craft skills are just astonishing and as you talk to those guys you clearly can feel the dedication to their craft. Both got trained by their parents and now following their path of creating playful, simple everyday objects and toys.

Hatice

In the passage between Eminönü and Karaköy you will meet Hatice. During the cold winter days, she is selling her hand-knitted goods. From socks, to gloves, hats, baby cloths etc. you can find beautiful products made with a lot of love, dedication and skills. The wool which Hatice uses for her products is from her hometown Balikesir, where her neighbours have sheeps and spun the threads for her knitting hands. All organic all local. Preserving this tradition is a big thing for Hatice, tho allready her grandmother was doing the same knittingpatterns as she does them nowadays.
