Ipanema Girls
I have been commissioned to create a textile collection inspired by sculptures and paintings of Gildario Sena. The 3-dimensional sculptures of two women – My so-called Ipanema Girls – are the starting point for this collection, together with two other paintings by Sena. Home printed textiles such as upholstery fabrics, cushion covers, curtains or smaller everyday objects are planned.
What to do?
First of all I will digitally process the photos of the sculptures and paintings. As soon as the photos are digitally outlined, it is possible to recolour, repeat, enlarge or otherwise rearrange the elements. A kind of “mis en place” will be arranged, as soon as all elements - the Silhouettes of the Ipanema Girls, branches, flowers and colours - are determined, the design process can go further and new textiles or surfaces will be created.
What is fascinating about this project?
Dynamic.
I am fascinated by the forms, dynamics and vividness of the sculptures. The spectrum of colours which the busts show is very diverse, cheerful and bright.
Playful.
The divas combine the playful, sensual, voluminous - with a tropical touch of Cachaca and Bossa Nova in the air of Rio from the 50s/60s.
