Light.Up

The idea behind this timeless lamp is to combine something old with something new, to allow an artifact of the textile industry to appear in a new light. After the printing roller or stamp got out of fashion for printing textiles in the industrial context around the 18th-19th century, these objects were often forgotten. As in case of this printing roll, which was purchased in France on a market, rollers and stamps were sometimes rediscovered and got a new purpose.

Making of…

The lamp stand was removed from the shade and new ink carefully dabbed onto the printing surface. It was important to use water-based inks so the surface of the roll could gently be cleaned after the printing process. The repeat on the roll was supposed to come to light again and be digitized. This way we did not only contribute to the revival of a forgotten pattern, but also created a new unique piece. After the pattern repeat had been reprinted, the design was digitized.
